Ten Years Ahead of the Curve: Why DrewMatic Still Leads the Automatic Game

Automatic Driving Lessons - Ten Years Ahead of the Curve: Why DrewMatic Still Leads the Automatic Game

DrewMatic has been doing automatic lessons for more than ten years. That used to be unusual. Most instructors stayed manual, told learners to do the same, and said automatics were for people who struggled. Then the market shifted. EVs arrived. Learners started asking for stress-free lessons. Now the big brands are pushing automatics too, and a few smaller schools have started lifting wording, bios and even taglines from people like us. That tells you one thing. We were early. We were right.

Automatic Driving Lessons - Ten Years Ahead of the Curve: Why DrewMatic Still Leads the Automatic Game

Here is the funny part. National stats show automatic pass rates are lower than manual. On paper, you should be getting worse results than the average instructor if you teach only automatics. Yet we believe we have more clean-sheet passes than any other automatic-only school in our area, and possibly wider than that. A clean sheet is a big deal because zero-fault passes are rare.

But it’s not JUST about a clean sheet, it’s the overall standard, and we keep raising it.

Automatic Driving Lessons - Ten Years Ahead of the Curve: Why DrewMatic Still Leads the Automatic Game

So how can an automatic-only school outperform the national picture where automatics usually pass less often? There are a few solid reasons, and none of them involve hype.

First, automatic lessons remove faff. No gears, no clutch, no stalls. That means the instructor can train the bit the examiner cares about, which is decision making at junctions, roundabouts, overtakes, speed on approach and observation. Many schools say this too, but still spend lesson time rescuing poor clutch control.

Automatic Driving Lessons - Ten Years Ahead of the Curve: Why DrewMatic Still Leads the Automatic Game

Second, we have stayed in one lane. We’ve spent a decade teaching one thing, in one kind of car, to one kind of learner. That leads to repeatable lesson plans, corrections we’ve seen a hundred times, and routes we know will trigger the habits the examiner will look at. You cannot fake that with a quick website build and a car wrap.

Third, we push for clean driving, not lucky driving. Instructors across the country say a perfect test is rare and only a tiny number of learners will manage it. We agree. Which is why we tell parents or partners who say “they drive fine with me” that “fine” on a Sunday Tesco run is not the same as safe under test pressure. We watch for the almost-mirror check, the half-hearted right shoulder, the late signal, the hesitated gap. The examiner marks faults, so removing those small faults is the only way to get a clean sheet.

Fourth, we mentor instructors to teach for zero. Most schools teach for a pass. We teach for no faults. That is a higher standard. It makes the learner slower to reach test, but it makes the result stronger. And when automatic test slots are hard to get, wasting a date on a half-ready learner is expensive.

Automatic Driving Lessons - Ten Years Ahead of the Curve: Why DrewMatic Still Leads the Automatic Game

Let’s add context. Across the UK, more people now take tests in automatics than ever. In some centres it’s one in four tests. EVs are pushing that even higher. That means more automatic schools will appear. Some will look a lot like us. Some already copy our profiles. That is fine. People notice who was first.

Here is what we want readers, parents and new instructors to understand.

Automatic lessons are not “easier passes.” The data prove that. You still have to deal with roundabouts, filtering traffic, speed limits that keep changing, following directions, and doing all of that without help. The gearbox is not why people fail. Judgement is.

So if a school that only does automatics is turning out zero-fault passes again and again, in a sector that usually passes less, the difference is not the car. The difference is the standard.

Now we’ll add a few truths about us directly. We have built a reputation for being real, tongue-in-cheek, cheeky and with the occasional barbed comment in between. Some instructors did not like that. They flounced off in childish rage quit strops to go their own way, unable to replicate our style or attitude.

We could be bigger. But we’d not be better.

DrewMatic instructors are selected for their ability to disrupt, to change the game and to rewrite the rules. They’re chosen because they teach the way their pupils learn. Not the other way around. Success after success proves it.

We started when people rolled their eyes. We stayed when others said it would not last. Now the market has caught up, and some are lifting our lines to look established.

We don’t do flashy brochures, catchy flyers or slick promo videos.

We do not need to copy anyone.

We have the passes to point to.

If you want to learn with us, or if you want to learn to teach with us, we are literally a phone call or a text message away.

Found Craig through Drewmatic, I needed a vehicle which was comfortable and adjustable for me and he had that covered . I have been on the roads 2 decades on 2 wheels , so turns out you can teach an old dog new tricks . Very patient and friendly throughout all my lessons and passed first time , and it’s very different to a riding a bike so was indeed learning over again . Top school with top instructors, just be ready for dad jokes 😂

I can't recommend Craig highly enough. When I first started learning to drive, I was absolutely petrified of being on the roads. Thanks to Craig's calm, patient approach, my confidence grew with every lesson. He helped me understand road signs, speed limits, and how to deal with different driving situations, all while making safety the top priority. No matter how nervous I felt or how many questions I asked, he was always incredibly patient, reassuring, and supportive. Craig didn't just teach me how to pass my test, he taught me how to be a safe, confident driver. If you're someone who feels anxious about driving or lacks confidence behind the wheel, I genuinely couldn't recommend Craig more. He's an excellent instructor who really takes the time to help you succeed.

I'm so pleased I made the decision to learn to drive with Drewmatic Automatic Driving School and even more grateful to Clint for teaching me. I was always put off learning to drive as I doubted myself too much and never thought it was achievable but, after my first lesson I felt at ease with the support and guidance from Clint. From beginning this journey in September 2025 with no experience of driving at all to passing first time June 2026 has been a great experience even at times where I may have struggled Clint explained things in a way that is easy to understand and his teaching method is effective which leads to success. I cannot thank Clint enough for this opportunity and continuing to believe in me. Highly recommended!

I've just passed my test after learning to drive with Charlotte. She was a fantastic instructor; she was always calm, reassuring, clear in her instructions and generally lovely. I was extremely anxious at the idea of learning to drive, and thus I had put it off until I was 25. Charlotte made me into a far more confident driver than I thought was even possible. I'd highly recommend her.
