DrewMatic Automatic Driving School started in November 2015. Not with a business plan or a marketing strategy. With a point to prove.
Drew spent some time as an instructor with one of the big name brands. He believed in them, worked hard for them, and trusted them. Until he realised they were only ever interested in one thing – extracting as much money as possible from the people working for them.
When he told them he was leaving, they said he’d never make it. That he’d come crawling back within three months. Why Aye!
That was nearly ten years ago.
DrewMatic was built from day one as the antidote to everything those brands represent. No excessive Franchise fees that bleed you dry. No head office that doesn’t care. No culture of treating instructors like cash machines.

The automatic stigma
We didn’t just build a business. We changed an industry.
There is a now ever shrinking stigma around automatic driving that is unique to the UK. Learning in an automatic has long been seen as the option for people who can’t manage a manual. For the desperate, for the incapable.
Drew saw people who were genuinely afraid of being judged and ridiculed for choosing automatic. He decided that was wrong and set out to fix it.
When DrewMatic launched as automatic only, many in the industry laughed. Nobody would go automatic only, they said. It would never work. Why Aye!
Now almost every manual driving school in the North East offers an automatic option. They all followed where we originally led.
Drew spent ten years as a driving instructor before joining the DVSA as a driving examiner. He knows the test from both sides of the car. He left the DVSA when they no longer represented his values and he wasn’t prepared to compromise them.
That background shapes everything DrewMatic does. Our instructors don’t just teach you to drive. They teach you how to think, we push you, we pull you back, we challenge you and we make you actually think about what you’re doing do that we can fully prepare you for exactly what an examiner expects on test day, because we know what that looks like from the inside and Drew has personally trained all of DrewMatic’s Driving Instructors to pass on to their pupils exactly how a Driving Examiner thinks. DrewMatic was only ever meant to be one instructor. But our word and message spread. Other instructors heard that message, saw the results, and joined. Today we cover Hartlepool, Sunderland, Durham, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Stockton, South Shields, Peterlee and beyond, with male and female automatic driving instructors available across the region.
