A Driving Instructor Franchise – Why Newcomers, ADIs and PDIs Are Walking Away From RED, AA, RAC, Bill Plant and PassNGo

If you’ve ever looked to leave a driving instructor franchise or If you teach under a RED Franchise, An AA Franchise, An RAC Franchise, A Bill Plant Franchise or a PassNGo Franchise, then it’s a fair bet that you already know the truth.

The logo gets the glory and you do all the work.

It always starts the same way with the Big brand, Big promises routine.

“Pupils sent to you.”

“Full diary.”

“Support team.”

“Specialist support manager.”

“Bottom wiped.”

Then the bills land. £100 to £300 a week in franchise fees, a likely commission cut on every hour you teach. Fuel. Insurance. Car branding. Mandatory checks. Office visits.

If a pupil cancels within the cancellation period, they still take their cut. If you get sick, you still pay. If you want a week off, you will still pay.

Most ADIs under big franchises hand over £10,000 to £15,000 a year before they even pay tax.

That is not support, what it actually is, is rent.

Don’t just take our word for it.

RED instructors have posted for years about poor bookings, long travel gaps and tests being booked without telling them. Bill Plant instructors talk openly about £250 a week fees with not enough pupils to cover it.

PassNGo runs a similar model – a long driving instructor contract, not enough work, high costs. It’s a different logo but it’s the same old trap.

You’ll also lose control because you do not set your prices, neither do you do not own your diary. You do not own your pupils. Some franchises even try to stop you keeping your own students when you leave. You are a self employed worker with employee level control. Most of them will fine you if you take on private work without cutting them in.

And don’t assume smaller regional schools are any different. The same model shows up everywhere – sleek website, big promises, and before long you’re just a number filling a slot in their system.

Driving Instructor Franchise Choice

The Law Changed in 2025

In 2025 the High Court case Ellis and Others v John Benson Limited changed the game. Twenty driving instructors walked out of a major franchise after the judge ruled the company used overbearing and intimidating tactics.

The court ruled there is a duty of good faith in franchise contracts. When a company breaches that duty, the contract ends. No exit penalties. No pupil clawbacks. No ransom fees. It’s now easier to leave a driving instructor franchise

If a franchise treats you like a cash source instead of a partner, the law now backs you.

What About Trainee Instructors?

PDIs get hit even harder. You pay thousands for training. You pay franchise fees while you’re still learning. You get pushed out on a pink badge before you feel ready. Fail Part 3 and you pay again. The big names do not care if you qualify. They care if you keep paying.

Reddit, Facebook groups and Indeed reviews all tell the same story. High costs. Low support. Constant pressure.

That is why smart PDIs and people looking for ADI Training, now skip the big brands entirely.

Thinking About Becoming a Driving Instructor?

DrewMatic offers full ADI and PDI training across the North East. Flat weekly fee, no percentage cuts, no hidden costs. Support from a former DVSA examiner.

Why Instructors Choose DrewMatic

DrewMatic is not a national call centre. No directors. No office staff. No shareholders. No overheads. Just a team of instructors with a shared distrust of the national brands, built from first hand experience of exactly what they do to people.

We are a North East automatic driving school. We cover Sunderland, Washington, Durham, Peterlee, Hartlepool, Gateshead, Darlington and many other areas.

We run one model. Flat weekly fee of £50 or £52. No percentage cuts. It drops after one year.

No charges when you are sick. No charges when you are on holiday.

If you earn £800 this week, you keep it. If you earn £1,200, you keep it.

Your pupils are yours. Your diary is yours. Your reputation is yours.

We run a proper booking app. Pupils book, pay and track their progress. No chasing. No admin hell.

The team speaks for itself.

Craig. Dave. Drew. Laura. Emma TH. Emma TR. Angie. Oli. Fran. Mark. Ian. Clint. Charlotte. Ray. Sophie.

Stop any of our instructors and ask them why they chose DrewMatic. More importantly, ask them if they’re happy.

The answer is public. Over 500 five star reviews across Google and Trustpilot. That doesn’t happen by accident.

And if you are currently stuck in a big franchise contract, we can help you get out. Quietly and legally. Using the 2025 ruling.

Time to Choose Your Future

If you are tired of paying hundreds a week to wear someone else’s logo, stop. If you are a trainee thinking of signing with RED, PassNGo, AA, RAC or Bill Plant, don’t.

Build something you own. Or join a school that treats you right.

This article reflects the experiences and opinions of DrewMatic and instructors who have shared their stories with us. It compares our franchise model to others based on publicly available information, industry feedback and our own operational approach. Individual experiences with other franchises may vary. Claims about fees and practices are general and should be verified directly with providers.

Found Craig through Drewmatic, I needed a vehicle which was comfortable and adjustable for me and he had that covered . I have been on the roads 2 decades on 2 wheels , so turns out you can teach an old dog new tricks . Very patient and friendly throughout all my lessons and passed first time , and it’s very different to a riding a bike so was indeed learning over again . Top school with top instructors, just be ready for dad jokes 😂

I can't recommend Craig highly enough. When I first started learning to drive, I was absolutely petrified of being on the roads. Thanks to Craig's calm, patient approach, my confidence grew with every lesson. He helped me understand road signs, speed limits, and how to deal with different driving situations, all while making safety the top priority. No matter how nervous I felt or how many questions I asked, he was always incredibly patient, reassuring, and supportive. Craig didn't just teach me how to pass my test, he taught me how to be a safe, confident driver. If you're someone who feels anxious about driving or lacks confidence behind the wheel, I genuinely couldn't recommend Craig more. He's an excellent instructor who really takes the time to help you succeed.

I'm so pleased I made the decision to learn to drive with Drewmatic Automatic Driving School and even more grateful to Clint for teaching me. I was always put off learning to drive as I doubted myself too much and never thought it was achievable but, after my first lesson I felt at ease with the support and guidance from Clint. From beginning this journey in September 2025 with no experience of driving at all to passing first time June 2026 has been a great experience even at times where I may have struggled Clint explained things in a way that is easy to understand and his teaching method is effective which leads to success. I cannot thank Clint enough for this opportunity and continuing to believe in me. Highly recommended!

I've just passed my test after learning to drive with Charlotte. She was a fantastic instructor; she was always calm, reassuring, clear in her instructions and generally lovely. I was extremely anxious at the idea of learning to drive, and thus I had put it off until I was 25. Charlotte made me into a far more confident driver than I thought was even possible. I'd highly recommend her.
